Bike to Work Chic & "Sleep Dog"
Photo by Mark Stosberg. Our first Kidical Mass ride will happen on Friday, May 15th. Which not-so-coincidentally, is also Bike-to-Work Day, Bike-to-School Day, and the Ballard Summer Streets celebration!
We'll be adding to the bikey fun with our own "bike to work" ride, taking our hard workers from Ballard to the swing shift at Gasworks. Come early, if you like, and enjoy the Ballard Summer Streets event, starting at 4pm. We'll meet up at Ballard Commons Park at 5:30pm, have a quick orientation, and the ride will depart at 6pm.
We'll parade to the Summer Streets celebration for a quick party in the streets, down Old Ballard Ave, and pick up the Burke-Gilman trail at Fred Meyer, riding it through Fremont to Gasworks Park in Wallingford. Join us at any point along the ride, or meet us at the end.
It'll be an easy-going ride, with no child left behind! As far as dinner goes, I think many will eat something before, but we'll also have treats at Gasworks, so feel free to bring some food along.
Apologies to any families already committed to other events on this busy day. We'll hope to see you in June! We figure this will be a bit of a "soft launch". In general, we plan to alternate between Friday evening (in the summer, at least) and Saturday morning rides. Parents of young kids tend to prefer Saturday morning, and getting to something after work can be challenging, but the older kids often have classes or weekend plans come Saturday. We'd love to know what works best for you, so please let us know via our signup form.
So ... bring your kids, your helmets, your lights (for the ride home, at least), and your bike finery! Decorations, signs, and the like are encouraged.
Here's the easy, flat 3 mile route!

A brief disclaimer: This ride will be an informal gathering of family cyclists. We won't be testing anyone's proficiency or asking you to fill out any waivers. While the spirit of our rides is to be looking out for one another, you are ultimately responsible for deciding what's safe and appropriate for you and your family.

Brilliant idea!
Please report how things went and how you organised yourselves, dealt woth motorised traffic, signals and potential conflicts etc. I think this could be a possibility for us here but I'd need answers to a lot of questions before I approach the local activists.
The "route" link doesn't work.
Hm. For me, it works, albeit slow to load. Try a different browser? It goes to the Bikely site, with a larger version of the route map, with cues (which I did for kicks - this not a "cue sheet needed" kinda ride).
Do you know any volunteers who could turn this into an event from both sides of North Seattle? We'd love to lead a group coming from Met Market in Bryant along the trail to meet you all at Gas Works.
Thanks Kari - it's on! Details in the latest KM post ...
You have posted the family bike ride for Friday, May 15th, but Friday is the 14th. I just wanted to be sure this was happening on the 14? Thanks!
Hi Taryn - This was last year's ride ... I just put up details for this May, here:
