« Why We Ride »
January 11, 2010 A slideshow celebration of cycling a la familia, from the family-biking-obsessed folks here at totcycle and our friends/inspirations from Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, and Eugene. Soundtrack from Vancouver, BC.
It's how we roll in the Pacific Northwest.
Viewing tip: fullscreen it (expand button in lower right), the resolution on Vimeo is surprisingly good. And tuuurn it up! Thanks so much to all who contributed photos.

LOVE. IT. Makes me want t get the kids out of their bathrobes and take them for a ride! Thanks for doing this.
PS- when do you sleep?
Brilliant! My oldest watched and pointed out to me all of the ways that she wants to ride bikes that we haven't already tried. Very inspiring!
Thanks Tim & Matt! Ah yes, sleep ... I remember it well.
Drew had a similar reaction to the video:
"Remember Pete and Gilly (featured)? That bike they have (xtracycle)? When I big girl I want that bike and my big girl bike". Consider it done ... but wow, bikelust at age 3. Trouble. But not surprising given her daddy.
so beautiful!!
thank you for making everyone who rides w/kids feel connected.
cheers to a Decade of Family Cycling!
Nicely done. Everyone looks wheely happy. Cute kids all around! Keep the simple life in a complex world alive everyone. Cheers.
really lovely... the songs you picked were just the ones. Monroe and Truman loved it, too, exclaiming over photos of them and the many many pictures of "baby!"
should be mandatory watching for all younguns, get em indoctrinated early.
Awesome. Love it. Sorry I didn't get any pics to you, but you somehow made it work without them. Etsi bravo!
YAY!!! OK, feeling the Pacific NW pull....
Perfect counterpoint to a parent I just met this morning making a comment how he would never cycle with his kids here b/c how could one put his/her kids in danger just to "prove a point." UGH.
I will quickly rewatch your video to cheer me up again after recounting that last bit.
Happy tears! Oh man I love it. Can't wait to join the fray... already gathering lovely things to hang on my bike-to-be (including some awesome stickers! - Thanks Sarah!)
This is fantastic! We are continually inspired by your love for family biking. Especially impressive is your wife's indoctrinaton & commuting with numerous children by bike. Dazzling, really. A less passionate man would not be as convincing.
I sent this link to my husband ( who is supportive but does not priortize the family biking as I do-he bikes for "fun runs" instead of to go places.) and titled the email- "My Tribe"
thanks.
Great site, stumbled across it just now. Bravo !

"My Tribe" ...
That's exactly how I feel.
Awww, that's adorable. :) Looks fun to sit in the cargo basket, but I think I'm too old for that. Thanks for sharing.
I would love to cycle around Seattle - rain or no rain!
This video is great. As a cyclist I get so excited every time I see families riding together.
Yet another reason to love Seattle and bikes.
Great video Julian, nice pics of everybody, and the music is fun, Love, Mom
how did i not watch this until now?! great little slideshow, well done! you've captured why i bike with my family perfectly.
Thank you for the site. I have a technical question... how would you have carried your cargo bike, trailer, etc with a minivan full or kids? Do you have a trailer or special rack or something?
We would have rented or borrowed. Portland and Vancouver, BC, our two weekend getaways of choice, both have Dutch/utility bike shops that rent bakfietsen and the like. You make a good point - even my most "normal" (in the US) bike doesn't fit our car-top bike rack because the full-coverage front fender hits the rack's tray. I imagine you might get an xtracycle on a tandem rack.
