Tots on bikes, kids as cargo, family cycling, and other high-occupancy velo goodness.

Not caring how much our bikes weigh since 2008.

Greenways in Wiki Stix

Work on Ballard Neighborhood Greenways routing and promotion has been fun (wikistix!), and we're excited to show folks what routes look good to us, and get your opinion. Join us tomorrow July 31, 2011, as Ballard Greenways and friends ride the routes, and wind up at a good, old-fashioned Field Day event.

I'm out of town, but Jen will be leading the ride, and was happy to include the Kidical Mass crew. On this 4 mile on-street ride, if your kids don't yet ride in a reasonably straight line or stop reliably, then they’re probably safer on a trailer, trail-a-bike, cargo bike, etc ...

Come join Ballard Greenways as we ride our favorite routes in Ballard! This is a family-friendly easy-going ride that will start and finish at the Ballard  Library, just in time for the Summer Field Day at Ballard Commons Park. We like quiet streets, with easy crossings as great routes for people of all ages to get around the neighborhood.

We’ll meet at the Ballard Library at 2:30 and leave at 3:00. We’ll ride some of our proposed Greenway routes and be back at the library by 4:00, just in time for the Summer Field Day.

What would you say is the best family-biking neighborhood in Seattle? My husband and I recently purchased a bakfiets (Workcycles) to get around our current hometown of Palo Alto, CA with our infant and toddler. In less than a year, however, we will be moving to Seattle. Our kids will be 1 and 4 when we move. We are looking for a neighborhood where we can easily get from home to stores, preschool, and playgrounds on our bike. Any recommendations? Bonus points if it is within bike commuting distance from Seattle Children's Hospital, where my husband will be working. We appreciate any advice from you or your readers. Your blog has been very helpful as we've been feeling our way to a family bike purchase. Looking forward to joining a Kidical Mass ride next year!

Ballard! But of course I'm biased. It is a very livable and relatively flatter neighborhood. Lots of families preschools, and parks, the locks, the beach, etc etc etc all within easy biking distance.

Other northside 'hoods to consider are Wallingford (steep hill though), Greenlake, Ravenna. All of which are getting closer to SCH than Ballard is. I did my residency there, and the bike commute from Ballard was ~40-45 min, maybe faster if your husband is a Cat 6 commuter. That was a big bike commute for a resident, and I did end up driving more than I liked.

Get in touch when you come up!

Wow! Long way to go. I'm very sure that you will still enjoy the activity even it looks so tiring.
